Our guide to the 11th session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD

The 11th session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD takes place in 12-14 June 2018 in the UN Headquarters in New York. It will be preceded by the Civil Society Forum on the 11th June.

The Conference will, as every year, take stock of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The theme is “Leaving no one behind through the full implementation of the CRPD”

Sub-themes:

  1. National fiscal space, public-private partnerships and international cooperation for strengthening the implementation of the CRPD
  2. Women and girls with disabilities
  3. Political participation and equal recognition before the law

Cross-cutting theme: Promoting high-quality disability statistics and disaggregation of data by disability status for the full realization of the rights of persons with disabilities

Important events

The conference will be preceded by the Civil Society Forum on the 11th June.The 3 days of the events will consist of a packed agenda during the main event and side events.

Here is what to look for during the 4 days:

Monday 11th June - Civil Society Forum

10:50AM to 11:50 PM

Our President, Yannis Vardakastanis will speak during the Civil Society Forum. He will speak on Panel 2, which will focus on article 4.3 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - involvement of persons with disabilities through representative organisations.

Tuesday 12th June

9 AM to 12 PM

  • Main event - Opening statements from António Guterres the Secretary-General of the United Nations; Maria Soledad Cisternas Reyes, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Disability and Accessibility; Theresia Degener, Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Catalina Devandas Aguilar, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Colin Allen, International Disability Alliance, Civil Society Representative

11:45 AM to 1:00 PM

The Disabled People's Organisations Denmark (DPOD) is organising a side event entitled "Leaving no one behind - inclusion in the labour market - counting and documenting it all" together the Danish ministry of social affairs, ADF and ILO in conference room B. 1:15 PM to 2:30 PM

We organise the side event "International developments toward accessibility standards coherence: Let's implement!" in conference room B. Read more about the side event here

3 PM to 4:15 PM

Yannis Vardakastanis, our President, will speak at side event "Disability at the stage of instability in the Arab world: safety of persons with disabilities in situations of conflict and excessive violence". The event will take place in conference room C.

Wednesday 13th June

3 PM to 6 PM

Main event - Matters related to the implementation of the Convention - Round Table 2: Women and girls with disabilities, with the participation of our Vice-President Ana Peláez Narváez

4:45 PM to 6 PM

We organise the side event "Using Social Dialogue to Advance the CRPD" in conference room B. Read more about the side event Yannis Vardakastanis, our President, is one of the panelists.

6:30 PM to 8 PM

We are speaking at a side event organised by our member EASPD "Assistive Technologies: services enabling independent living and inclusion". The event will take place in Conference Room 4.

6:30 PM to 8 PM

We are speaking at a side event organised by the Pacific Disability Forum "From Recognition to Realisation of Rights: Furthering Effective Partnership for an Inclusive Pacific 2030". The event will take place in Conference Room B.

6:30 PM to 8 PM

Yannis Vardakastanis, our President, will speak on the side event organised by our member Fundacion ONCE "New ways of employment and social inclusion to leave no one behind". The event will take place in conference Room 12.

Thursday 14th June

1:15PM to 2:30 PM

Yannis Vardakastanis, our President will speak on the side event organised by the CRPD Committee on the General comment on Art 4.3 and 33.3

6:30PM to 8:00 PM

Pat Clarke, our Vice-President will speak on the side event organised by the Bridging the Gap project. Conference Room 7
