EU must make its development cooperation inclusive

Group of persons with disabilities and persons without disabilities in Haiti

The European Union (EU) has been a great supporter of a disability inclusive sustainable development framework. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted in 2015, include specific references to persons with disabilities. The EU has also ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and this includes a specific article on International Cooperation (Article 32).

Right now, the European Commission is in the process of reviewing the EU Consensus on Development. This is a policy statement that commits the EU to eradicating poverty and building a fairer and more stable world.

Today, the regional representative organisations of persons with disabilities from Europe, Africa, the Pacific, Arab and Latin American regions call on the Commissioner for Development Cooperation, Commissioner Mimica to ensure persons with disabilities are fully included in the EU Consensus on Development.
