The 11th session of the Conference of States Parties to the CRPD takes place in 12-14 June in New York.

The Conference will, as every year, take stock of the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The theme is “Leaving no one behind through the full implementation of the CRPD”

On June 11th the Civil Society Forum takes place, at the UN headquarters in New York. Some member states support the participation of Disabled Persons Organisations at the Conference.

Active participation at the Conference can include:

  • Attending all the plenary sessions, including this year observing the elections to the CRPD committee
  • Attending a range of side events
  • Running side events
  • Short Civil Society Organisation’s speeches from the floor (coordinated last year by International Disability Alliance- EDF works closely with them on this)

Cross-cutting theme: Promoting high-quality disability statistics and disaggregation of data by disability status for the full realization of the rights of persons with disabilities

The conference will be preceded by the Civil Society Forum on the 11th June.The 3 days of the events will consist of a packed agenda during the main event and side events. Here is what to look for during the 4 days:

Monday 11th June - Civil Society Forum

Our President, Yannis Vardakastanis will speak during the Civil Society Forum. He will speak on Panel 2, which will focus on article 4.3 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities - involvement of persons with disabilities through representative organisations.

Tuesday 12th June

9 AM to 12 PM

  • Main event - Opening statements from António Guterres the Secretary-General of the United Nations; Maria Soledad Cisternas Reyes, Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Disability and Accessibility; Theresia Degener, Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Catalina Devandas Aguilar, UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; Colin Allen, International Disability Alliance, Civil Society Representative

Yannis Vardakastanis, our President, will speak at side event "Disability at the stage of instability in the Arab world: safety of persons with disabilities in situations of conflict and excessive violence.". The event will take place in conference room C.
