Goodbye to a great disability activist & EDF board member Boris Šuštaršič.

28 August 2018

It is with great sorrow that we learned of the death of Slovenian disability activist Boris Šuštaršič, a great disability activist and EDF Board member from 2005 until last year.

Boris Šuštaršič was instrumental for the creation of a strong Slovenian network of persons with disabilities. He was President of the National Council of Disabled Organizations of Slovenia and authored and co-authored several articles and papers on the topic of disabilities.

Mr Šuštaršič held the function of State Councillor in several mandates. He was commended by the Ministry of Labour, Family and Social Affairs for exceptional success in his work in the field of social care and decorated with an honorary “sign of the freedom of the Republic of Slovenia” for his personal contribution to the advancement of the rights of persons with disabilities in Slovenia.

Yannis Vardakastanis, president of the European Disability Forum stated:

The European disability movement, and myself personally, will greatly miss Boris. He was a leader in Slovenia: fighting for the rights and improving the living conditions of people with disabilities. He was an innovator, a true European and a long-standing Board member of EDF. He will be greatly missed by us all. We mourn his loss and extend our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues in Slovenia.
